Ethical Principles
Virtue, right conduct, ethics and morality are part of a complex concept Hindus call Dharma. Dharma is everything that is essential for people, the world and nature to exist and prosper together in harmony. Ethics are explained in Hindu philosophy as something that cannot be forced on somebody, but something that is realized and lived up to by each individual. Ethics revolve around the Vedas and the Upanishads but used as scriptures to guide individuals. A scholar created five virtues necessary for a human being to live a dharmic life:
-Ahimsa (Non-violence), -Dama (self restraint), -Asteya (Non-covetousness/Non-stealing) -Saucha (inner purity), -Satyam (truthfulness) |
